The Mercurial Grounds

The Burning Plague

Kaiyas and Algius enter a town in ruin. The Burning Plague has hit Serpent’s Pass hard. The town seems deserted and there are corpses piled as high as a man outside the local church. The only sign of life is a single human male working diligently, saying prayers for the deceased and digging graves.

When approached, the priest introduces himself as Father Samuel, the local cleric. Samuel tells the adventurers a tale of how a few months ago miners started returning from the local silver mine complaining of fevers and sores on their skin. Then, overnight, the cattle all died. That was when they realized the plague was in the water, but it was too late. By that time most of the population were showing symptoms and it was all Samuel and his two assistants could do to treat the infected. Not many were able to fight off the disease, but those that did are tending the sick in their homes. Samuel is the only cleric left.

The party decides to stay a couple of nights and prepare before heading to the silver mine. During that time Kaiyas helps Samuel as much as possible by purifying water for the town, but they camp outside of town for fear of infection.

After two nights of preparation the party heads out…

Branching Out

Kaiyas and Algius are approached by a local villager who, impressed by their bravery, decides to ask them to help her brother Samuel. She explains that her brother is the town priest and healer in Serpent’s Pass and that they have recently fallen victim to a terrible plague. She has not heard from Samuel in quite some time and fears the worst. The villager explains that she cannot provide any payment, but all she asks is news of the fate of her brother…

During the trip, our adventurers come across a small cottage just off the road. They can hear loud crashing and the smashing of pottery all the way from the road followed by a sudden silence and stillness.

The adventurers enter the house to find a quaint living room. Beyond the living room is a hallway and a doorway to a kitchen. In the kitchen they find what they assume is the source of the ruckus. There is smashed pottery and pots and pans thrown all over this room. Upon investigating the oven Kaiyas finds a small fire elemental in the corner looking rather menacing, so she wisely shuts the door and leaves it alone. They notice another door in the kitchen, presumably leading to a cellar, that has a chair propped in front of it preventing the door from being opened. Kaiyas decides to investigate further before finding out what lies beyond the barred door.

The hallway terminates with a closed door that, when opened, reveals the master bedroom with books strewn about. There is a bloodied, unconscious man tied to the bed and an imp sitting atop the dresser idly tearing pages from a book. The imp springs to the attack upon seeing Kaiyas enter the room. Both Kaiyas and Algius hit the imp with everything they’ve got, but the imp seems able to just shrug off even some of their hardest hits. The imp repeatedly jabs it’s poisoned tail at Kaiyas, mostly missing, but occasionally landing a glancing blow. Over time, Kaiyas starts to feel the effects of the imps poison. Her joints feel stiff and she seems a sluggish. The imp casts a spell and looks at Algius and tells him “go make sure you were not followed”. Algius obeys the command and stops attacking to turn around and walk back the way he came. Kaiyas desperately swings at the imp and lands a lucky shot to the midsection, cleaving the beast in two.

Upon reviving the bloodied human, they notice that some of the bloodstains were, in fact, tomato sauce. Gendrew explains that he and his wife, Andolyn have created a Calzone Golem to guard a chef’s kitchen, but an imp showed up out of nowhere and sent it into a rage. He was barely able to lock it in the basement pantry before he himself was rendered unconscious by the golem and imp’s fierce attacks.

Kaiyas asks where Andolyn is and how long she’ll be gone. Gendrew says that he is unsure. Andolyn’s errands are beyond him and she is usually gone for many hours.

As if summoned by the conversation, Andolyn teleports in the room at that exact second asking what has happened.

Kaiyas and Gendrew explain the situation and Andolyn thanks them profusely, offering a box of potions as payment and her services as a potion maker and alchemist whenever they may need in the future.

Kaiyas graciously accepts the gift and asks if Andolyn has had any work from Serpent’s Pass recently. Andolyn says she hasn’t had any customers from that area in at least a month, but that is not entirely out of the ordinary. The average time between visits from the Serpent’s Pass area is about 3 weeks…

The Pirate Camp

KaiyasandAlgius set up camp about 200yds outside the pirate camp. Algius performs some more reconnaissance for another full day in order to learn the pirates’ habits. During this reconnaissance, Algius learns that the pirates have 2 people on patrol at any given time accept meal times, when all the pirates return for their meal. He also discovers that the pirates have apparently been successful with their false lighthouse ruse. The female human, that Algius presumes is the captain, has been supervising the sorting of loot all day long. Once sorted, the loot is placed in barrels and buried just above the high tide line on the beach. There is also a male dwarf that seems to be a captain of the guard of sorts. He supervises the patrols and even occasionally goes out on patrol himself. Other than the captain and dwarf, there are 6 pirates.

Armed with this new information, the party decides to try and enlist aid from the local lizardfolk tribe. They head out to where they encountered the female Lizardman earlier. Algius is able to find some tracks good enough to follow but they dead end at a solution hole. After nearly being a meal for the alligator that dug the hole, the female appears again and greets the heros. They explain the situation to her and request any help they might be able to provide. She says that she will request the aid from her chieftain and meet them in the morning if the answer is yes.

Kaiyas and Algius decide to thin the pirate numbers as much as possible in the mean time by ambushing their patrols. They set up an ambush just on the other side of the first turn in the trail leading away from the camp. The first patrol they happen across is eliminated with ease, but then the patrols stop coming. The adventurers decide to call it a night and get some rest before the attack in the morning.

The next morning the lizardfolk show up with 4 warriors, including the original female the heros befriended. One more reconnaissance patrol around the camp shows that the pirates are on full alert. They have ceased all patrols and 2 pirates patrol the perimeter of the camp at opposite sides from each other while the captain and the dwarf stand watch in the middle of the camp with the remaining two pirates. Kaiyas comes up with a strategy to attack from 3 sides as stealthily as possible and draw the pirates from the center of the camp. Algius takes up a sniper position on the north side of camp at the base of the fake lighthouse while Kaiyas is in the sawgrass at the opposite end of the camp waiting the patrol. The two pirates patrolling the perimeter arrive in front of Kaiyas and Algius at approximately the same time and Algius is able to down his as he is out of sight of the rest behind a building. Kaiyas, unfortunately, merely wounds hers and immediately the two pirates in the center advance to investigate the disturbance, but the captain waits it out while casting some sort of protective spell on herself and the dwarf sneaks off to the side in order to make a sneak attack on anybody coming around the corner of the building.

In an effort to draw the attention of the advancing pirates or the captain, the lizardfolk then exit the brush and throw their javelins at the pirates, but they are too far away and all 3 javelins fall short. The pirates are not drawn away by the distraction as originally planned so the lizardfolk split up and one moves to aid Kaiyas while the other two advance on the captain.

Meanwhile, Algius advances up the beach to decrease the range to his next target slightly and looses an arrow at the unaware captain. It hits her hard in the back and drops her to one knee, but she is still capable of fighting and is now aware of the third and last threat. She downs a pink liquid in a vial and moves to put a building between her and Algius while simultaneously drawing close enough to deal with the lizardfolk threat. The dwarf turns and shoots his crossbow at Algius and scores a grazing shoulder wound.

Kaiyas and Luna are able to finish off the wounded pirate before the other two arrive and she and her wolf immediately attack them as they turn the corner to the building she is behind. One pirate goes down immediately and the other swings wildly and misses as the single lizardman charges him, bashing him with his mace but doing little damage.

Algius realizes that his new opponent is formidable and backs up to keep his one advantage, range. Algius looses another arrow but it flies wide and the Dwarf keeps advancing, managing to stay within his shorter crossbow range, and lets another bolt fly that hits Algius square in the chest dropping him to the ground unconscious.

The captain pulls some sand from a pouch on her belt, recites an incantation and blows it at the lizardmen. One drops instantly and the other keeps advancing. The captain then drops the longbow she was carrying and draws the greatsword strapped to her back preparing for the upcoming attack.

Kaiyas and her wolf finish off the last pirate and advance, with the lizardman, toward the captain.

The dwarf turns his attention to his captain and moves in position to fire crossbow bolts at her assailants, but Kaiyas sees this and conjures a globe of pure darkness between the dwarf and herself and her allies, while simultaneously commanding Luna to attack the captain. Luna pounces and tears a hole in the captains armor, but is unable to knock her down. The lizardmen however are able to bring her down and move to eliminate the dwarf who used the darkness as an opportunity to hide and start sneaking away. Luna is hot on the dwarf’s scent and leading the rest of the attackers right to her, so the dwarf shoots the wolf with her crossbow and Luna tumbles to the ground with a loud yelp.

Unfortunately for the rogue, Algius was able to regain consciousness, drink a healing potion and move within range. The ranger takes another shot, but misses again. By this time Kaiyas and the lizardmen have caught up to the dwarf and he surrenders rather than try to flee when so many are on his trail.

Kaiyas is able to heal Luna and luckily, the dropped lizardman was merely put into a magical sleep. Now it is time to decide the fate of the dwarven pirate. Kaiyas and Algius decide it best to turn the rogue over the the lizardmen since there is nobody left to speak for the murdered family and they fear they will not be able to keep him detained long enough to get back to town.

The adventurers return to town and hire a ship to return to the area and dig up the stolen cargo. They return to SeaWell heros.

The Lighthouse

As the end of day 2 on The Great Marsh Peninsula; after braving the alligators, snakes, and panthers that inhabit the area our adventurers come across two Humans rounding a corner on the trail…

Upon seeing KaiyasandAlgius, the two humans immediately dart to either side of the path and fire their crossbows using the sawgrass for cover. Algius notches an arrow in his home-made Longbow and drops the one on the right in one shot. Kaiyas looses a pebble from her sling at the other, but is unable to get a bead on her target in the tall grass, so she commands Luna (her Wolf companion) to attack.

Upon seeing that he is obviously outmatched, the surviving Human gets up to run away and is immediately slammed by something large attacking from his right side. He would not live long enough to ever know it was Luna…

Even with just a cursory inspection of the bodies, it is apparent that these are pirates. They are wearing typical sailor garb and carrying decent combat equipment. Not to mention the “shoot first ask questions later” mentality. Given this new development, our heros decide it prudent to scout the area carefully and remain hidden until they can find the lighthouse. The Pirates are sure to notice a missing patrol. They do not make it far without further incident…

Not even a mile from the area where the pirates attacked them, Kaiyas and Algius are abruptly stopped by a javelin flying from the tall grass into the path about 5 feet in front of them. What appears to be a human size alligator standing upright and wielding a mace and shield steps out on to the path.

The Lizardman, called so even though it is female, asks who the adventurers are and what they are doing here. Surprised that she can understand the crude Common that the reptile is speaking, Kaiyas explains that she is investigating the Lizardfolk raids on the town of SeaWell and Algius is trying to find out what has happened to the shipments. The reptilian explains that her particular tribe is not responsible for the raids and that, in fact, they had a friendly trade relationship with the family that keeps the lighthouse, but none of her tribe has seen or heard from them since the pirates moved in. She further explains that it is the pirates that are stirring up the Lizardfolk and encouraging them to rampage. Kaiyas recounts her and Algius’ encounter with the pirates and how, if the information that the Lizardfolk have provided is accurate, it suggests that their trek to investigate the light house was well founded. She asks the Lizardman if she has any information on the pirates or how best to get to the lighthouse without alerting the pirates. The lizardman tells Kaiyas the location of the pirate camp and that the lighthouse lies only a short distance offshore from the camp. She asks only that the party keep her and her tribe informed of any information that they gather. Kaiyas agrees and the adventurers continue their scouting.

Kaiyas and Algius find the camp right where the Lizardman said it would be. Algius spends a few hours scouting the camp while Kaiyas remains hidden in the brush a short distance off the trail leading to it. Upon returning, Algius explains that the layout of the camp is rather basic but well built. The pirates have built a fake lighthouse on the beach and are, presumably, using it at night in an effort to crash merchant ships on the nearby reef. He explains that the party is also greatly outnumbered if it comes to battle. Algius thinks it best to bypass the camp and see what can be discovered at the lighthouse. Kaiyas agrees and they steal one of the rowboats moored at the camp and head to the lighthouse…

Getting to the lighthouse was surprisingly easy, all things considered, but upon opening the front door they see why. It is obvious that nobody has entered the lighthouse in quite some time judging by the layer of dust that coats the place. The layout of the building is circular, for obvious reasons, and the rooms run the circumference of the building with the main staircase in the center, rising all the way to the top. The lighthouse glass had been smashed thoroughly to pieces and the rest of the building had been diligently looted of anything of value. All things not of value had been idly discarded without care about the rooms. Including the bodies of the family that lived there. It appeared as though they were killed in their rooms, possibly while sleeping, but what bothered Kaiyas the most is that they were treated no better than the items that were not looted. Their bodies were just left where they fell with books, papers, and other non-valuables that were not wanted scattered over them if that is where they happened to fall. To make matters worse, one of the victims was a small boy about 8 years old. Treated no better than the rest, lying amid his toys in his room.

Kaiyas decides that these pirates must be brought to justice, outnumbered or not. Algius is not hard to convince either…

New Beginnings
Kaiyas solo campaign

Young orphaned elf, Kaiyas, has finally finished her Druid education and ventures out to explore the world for herself. But not without a mission.

Her druid clan leaders are concerned about the local lizard man population. Recently the lizard man attacks on the local trade town of SeaWell have increased nearly tenfold. It is all the local militia can do to keep them at bay. Thus the leaders have seen Kaiyas’ graduation as an opportunity to discover what is causing this disruption in the balance of nature in The Great Marsh Peninsula that the druid clan presides over.

Meanwhile, the town of SeaWell is concerned for more than just the increased Lizard man raids. Not a single trade ship has arrived in the last 6 weeks. Since trade is the lifeblood of SeaWell, this has thrown their economy into a severe depression. The town council believes that some mishap may have befallen the light house to the northeast that guides the trade ships through the treacherous reef on the north side of the peninsula, however they have been unable to investigate as of yet due to the constant lizard man raids. In their desperation they have hired a visiting Human Ranger named Algius, to investigate.

Kaiyas has decided to assist in the defense of SeaWell in the hopes that a lead may present itself (or at least an opportunity to interrogate one of the culprits).

Kaiyas arrives in SeaWell just as another raid begins. As all available forces run to the north side of town she sees a lone human (Algius) leaving via the east gate. Intrigued, she questions the Human and learns that he is heading to the light house to investigate. Kaiyas figures that this is as good a place as any to begin her investigation into the lizard man attacks and asks if she can accompany him on his journey. Algius’ reply is simply “as long as you can keep up” and thus begins their journey…
